Hi there, a different Sunday run.
The Old Truck, Bus, Commercial Vehicle and Machinery field day and swap meet is held each year at this time at the Cleveland Show grounds.
The displays were fewer this year than previous shows but there was still plenty to see and spend your dollars on at the swap meet section. Old petrol bowsers, oil dispensers, parts for early model cars, tractors and commercials.
From a chain drive Mack flat top truck through to Barnes Auto showing off their new Scania 600hp 8 wheel heavy duty recovery unit.
Brought back many memories of many slow painful miles between Sydney and Cairns, no air condt, no power steer, sleep across hard front seat, with a 160hp Cummins engine that was terrified of hills and hydraulic brakes that made the bravest clench their cheeks going down hill.
While I was looking a beautifully restored B Model Mack, some poor sad fellow said ?gee these were a great truck; they certainly don?t make them like this anymore?.
I thought you are dead set wanker, they would have been the biggest mongrel of a thing to drive, hot in summer, cold in winter, back breaking rough ride and cramped like nothing else on the road, undoubtedly he had never worked one, Thank God they don?t make them like that anymore.
There were a lot of units for sale, I guess the costs of restoring and maintaining some of the equipment runs in the tens of thousands and where transport companies at one time got involved, today smaller ones cannot afford the luxury and the bigger companies cannot be bothered.
There were only 3 motorcycles and 1 outfit on display, they were part of the military display and had been done up to a high standard, including all the leather work that had been hand sown. and the workmanship was 1st class; a credit to their owners.
One greasy bacon & egg roll for breakfast from the canteen and it was time to get home before the grease did its trick.
It was worth the run down to Cleveland, next weekend I am going to Kilcoy for the Valley Rally where I will set up our promo stall and enjoy a good time and a cold cleansing ale with some of the Ulysses people from around the area. Take care. Macca
